Influences from my travels and updates on SS2012 Runway !!!

I am back from many weeks of what feels like a crazy journey,I wanted to blog about my trips but alas sadly I did not have internet always and now I am excited to be here to share with you some thoughts on Spring Summer make-up,influences from my travels and more....

I began my journey in the Philippines on a small island off Cebu,the water was completely calm and the light made the skies almost lavender at times,the peace and tranquility of the place almost began my thoughts for make-up for Spring Summer 2012.

From here I returned to New York just in time for fashion week ,and here I noticed that most of SS2012 make-up was very minimal,loved the Marc Jacobs eye which became slightly droopy from the big lashes and thick liner .

Prabals collection was amazing very different, loving the dark wine stained mouth ,I never feel that works with the lighter feeling of Spring Summer but this time I really like it and the collection was flawless....

After New York,I went off to Paris to work,shooting the collections for a client and taking in some shows and of course a few parties.The weather was amazing and again even amongst the madness of fashion week again I was loving the subtle colours and amazed by some of the collections such as Mcqueens where again the make-up was so simple ,slightly pale face and nude lip,but the fantastic headpieces which came down as a mask in some cases gave the most ethereal feeling of just enough drama and mystery without overdoing ......

Of course always the creative juices flow more heavily in Paris and yet I really enjoyed the elegance of how simple alot of hair and make-up was working with the designs,another one of my faves was Preen,where the hair, off to one side and make-up dewy , peaches and sorbets worked so well.....................

Some of my other favourite collections where the make-up was minimal and nude in tones were Lanvin and of course Balenciaga,Issey Miyake ,and Isabel Marant........

Zac Posen's elegance of the almost 60's like eyeliner with lashes again,was just slightly edged off with an orange lip which gave it a difference and just looked beyond paired with his amazing dresses and gowns ,elegant chic and very cool!!!!

And then there is the always the reliable Gareth Pugh and Rick Owens whose style just takes fashion to the unexpected and therefore allows the hair and make-up to do the same ,although this time not quite as shocking as other seasons ,it seems the theme this season was less is more,but here we see a white eye for Gareth and a paler face and orange red lip for Owens ,but the main attraction for make-up this season would go to Vivienne Westwood,where the incomparable Val Garland went almost space aged with a metallic feel paired with pinks and blue and I was backstage after the show and took a picture of one of the many make-up looks for the show.........

morning smokey
1..just pencil on top of eye,close to lashes,with a dark brown pencil..I love Mattese sold at Rickys!

2..smudge pencil with finger or brush and blend a little outwards.

over the top of the pencil,set it with a little dark brown eyeshadow ,so it stays ,

love Dior /Beige Massai 5 color set.

3. little contour for stronger cheeks/Mac Sculpt.

4. soft lips...Nars 'Dolce Vita'

lunchtime date

1.take pencil under the eye,just going from outer eye,about half way to the middle.

2. smudge again,and then go over a little with dark brown eyeshadow.

It is very important to blend ,we don't want to do a racoon eye!!!

3. I always like to add a little highlighter with a smokey eye,it sets it off really well,and also helps to blend the corners..

Ben Nye /Ice

you can lightly brush onto the edges of the dark powder and dot it in the corners.

4.. to create more of a balance with the eye,lets pop up the cheek color a bit more...

Nars Orgasm,[always good for a lunchtime date]

use in either a creme stick or powder blush,apply to apple of the cheeks!

4. with an extra spark ,add Super Orgasm in lip gloss.

after work drinks...
1. add more smoke!!

to give more depth to the color it is also good to try a dark grey,not as harsh as black,but more drammatic than brown!

try Brumes eye duo from Nars...

using the darker side,add the eyeshadow to the top of the eyelid,blending in with the existing brown,and making sure again to avoid the hard edges,don't take it all the way to the existing shadow , stick to close to the lash line to give drama,and then you can blend it into the existing brown.

Also good to take dark brown pencil inside the wetline at this point for an extra smokey effect.

2 to create more earley evening drama ,lets add more highlighter to the cheeks,so lightly brush Ben Nye /Ice to above the cheek bone.

3. Nude lips also give an illusion of more drama with the darker eye,so lets try a slight dab of foundation,I always love Nars 'Sheer Glow' foundation.

Just to take away the lip colour,but make sure your lips are not dry,so always good to use lip balm before applying .

finish with a nude lip gloss,

Nars /Striptease..

sets the mood for the evening ,but keep your clothes on girls!!!

Major Nightime

1. to achieve this look we are going really dark on the eyes.

using black liquid liner..I like Mac Creme liner,as it works great with any brush,just add water!

apply liner to top of the eye ,close to the lashes,and if possible try and dot some in between lashes.

you can take it out past the corners just a little.

2. adding more shadow now,we can switch to a black,or stick with the darker grey,really add depth though,close to the liner and winging it out slightly towards to corners.I like 'Tatou' by Channel.

3. At this point we should really darken the brows to heighten the drama,using a brush lightly stroke color over the brows and extend the brow a little to define and lengthen.

I love Brow Zings by Benefit!

4.Ok girls,if anyone really wants to try extra drama,at this point I would try to apply single lashes,available at any local drug story,

dot some clear white glue on your hand and with tweezers,dab the end of the single lash into the glue,don't use too much,and close the eye and try and add to the outer corners of the lashline,to really give you a sexy cat eye effect.

It is not easy but with practice it is doable!!

Colour Smokey!

1. As an alternative to darker browns and greys/blacks,it is also possible to create a smokey eye with a colour,I like to use purple because it has a darkness to it and works well with a brown or a black eyeliner.

A good purple to try ..

Melusine,by Nars

first use the brown eyeliner or the black whichever you prefer,create a line between the lashes.if you want the eyeshadow to stick well to the eyelid,its always good to add a touch of foundation before applying that way the shadow has something to stick to..

with a brush apply shadow to the lid,blending out and smudging with finger,with color it is better to not go past the socket line ,and keep the area smaller ,as the colors are quite strong ,and less is more!!!

2..I don't think you need blush with a strong colour on the eye,best to keep it simple.

3. lips

for an extra pop of colour try Schiap,matt lipstcik by Nars,just dab it on with your finger for an explosion of pink !

SO every now and again I try and make it to one of the exhibitons at the infamous Milk studio gallery,there are some great shows there and this can definitety be included as one of them.

Rankin is one of my favourite photographers of my generation,he started Dazed and Confused just as I began doing make-up out of college.
On a make-up note,I adore the turquoise blue eye on what looks like Marilyn Manson,3rd from the end !!

As we all know the perfect make-up is only looking perfect with the helping hand of great retouchers,or in real life of course great skin!!

I have been very lucky this year to come across the most amazing new skin care line called 'Sunday Riley'.

I was working on a show in Paris with the amazing and lovely Diane Kendal,and these great products were sprawling around our make-up area,and excitingly I asked the PR woman all about them,and she informed me that what is so great about these products is they have the impressive science of a contemporary product which can infact do what it may suggest on the bottle,fight signs of aging ,combat free radicals,work on blemishes,help lighten dark spots,improve skin's texture and moisture and decrease fine lines,but also have the gentleness of it's competitors within the organic ingredients and natural as it can be while actually working.

I jumped with joy as struggling through life with very sensitive skin,I find there are many products which just irritate and however great they are at fighting the signs of aging they would most probably cause some weird rash or allergic reaction!

I asked her to recomend what she thought I should try and she very kindly gave me an eye cream,an aging serum,a night oil,and a day cream.
I went home that evening and immediately suspended my Jurlique which I had been using for a short while and actually really liked,but knew it did not possess the science to help my skin go back in time,and this is something I felt at this point I wanted to reverse or at least suspend if at all possible !!

I have to say, as the PR suggested ,after a few weeks I felt my skin had benefited hugely by the properties of these magical creams and my skin felt moist and not in any way irritated ,so obviously perfect for highly sensitive skin,and although I can't say that years of life's stress's have disappeared if I were to be totally realistic I would say that I had a youthfulness about my face and a softeness to touch that makes me still excited to keep using them.

I would strongly recommend them to any women from the age of early 30's onwards and up,and I am excited to share the new beauty secrets of better looking skin....

I have to admit I have been really shocking at adding my new stories,mostly because after travelling to Europe I really didn't have anything too exciting to add...
I realized that now I have a scanner I can add all my fave images from my archives thus far,faves cos of hair,or make-up or fashion or just pic..

I am not entirely sure if perhaps I am missing something but you decide, if this years fall collections have become slightly mundane ,with most of the shows going for natural make-up ,it makes me ask what has happened to all the creativity? INFLUENCES FROM AFRICA

It is very well known that Tribal make-up has had a huge influence on fashion for many many years,not only just in make-up but also collections such as Marc by Marc Jacobs spring summer 2010!

I think that the concept of playing around with bright vivid colours in a creative manner might seem for the runway or a fashion magazine only but we have to always be a little brave when trying something new,so even though I am not suggesting that you would paint lines across your face or indeed brush yellow powder across your cheeks ,as with everything in fashion if you dilute an idea down there is always a way to bring just a hint of an influence into a look for an occasion,perhaps it is a blue pencil dotted across your eyeline or a choice of 2 colours,blue and pink side by side ,a wash of a colour across your cheek for instance but very muted.

Lashes!

Ok I wanted to give you a great tip for Christmas extra special make-up...I know we have talked about red lips and I am sure every magazine has talked about smokey eyes and glossy lips,but perhaps you can experiment with lashes.
Single lashes or full,lashes are a fab way to make your eyes pop,stand out and really give your look a sense of glamour.
It may be intimidating the idea of applying them,but just give it a go,the white glue is definitely easier as it dries as neutral ,the dark glue leaves behind marks ,so pick out your party lashes ,trim them to fit your eye size ,as normally they are always a few millimeters too long,put the glue on the part of the lash which is going to go on the eyelid,but before applying lashes just let the glue dry for a bit so as to make it stickier when you apply.
If they feel a little unsafe still you might need more glue,so just use a tiny eyeliner brush and put a dab more glue inside to secure.

LEIGH BOWERY A TRUE ERA OF THE LONDON CLUB SCENE !!!!!!!!!

These images are from an exhibition of Johnny Rozsa,infamous for taking gorgeous celebrity pictures in the eighties,these are some of his images of Leigh Bowery from the late eighties .
Leigh Bowery had a club in Leicester square /London which was very underground where the likes of John Galliano,Boy George,and some of fashions greatest superstars would hang out in their young days and party till the early hours.The last shot ,was of the Trojan doorman.

It was a great era for make-up and inspired the likes of some of the worlds leading make-up artists such as Pat McGrath.
Leigh's pig image was even featured as the cover of ID in the early nineties......

How do you get this great look and when would you wear it? I would say that this strong black eyeline is fun to pull off when getting really dressed up for a party or event ,I would suggest perhaps making the line a little thinner as this thickness is for the runway.
I used Mac Creme Liner,which is such a great product to do a strong 60's inspired line like this,it drys really quickly ,you have to add a touch of water to it to make it wet and then with a thin eyeliner brush start by dotting in the eyelash line then go over the lash line again making it thicker and taking it out towards the end of the eye,unlike my line underneath here in the pictures I would make the underneath line even thinner,and then let it meet the top line out at the corners...

I would suggest either a lip balm or a nude lip with this strong line again giving you a feeling of Mary Quant ,but a new 2010 version!!

MY SHOWS SPRING SUMMER 2011

Again I apologize I have not been following up with my runway reports ,I am about to endeavor on the task at hand for London,Milan and Paris which is now in full swing ,so in the mean time I wanted to post some of the runway pics of the 8 shows I did for fashion 360,which is part of Elle.com and is sponsored by various different companies to allow some younger designers to show.
I was excited to be able to work on these shows and work with the designers and also work with a line of make-up products which were new to me called, Beauti Control.
I really enjoyed working with these products,I especially liked the SECRET AGENT UNDERCOVER MAKE-UP ,which is a lightweight cover and goes on really creamy and sheer so perfect for day as well as night,there are lots of shades for all skin tones and they are put in categories for pink tones,yellow and normal,so you just have to figure out which skin tone you are,my personal favourite shades are the yellow 2 and 3, and all the neutral shades.
I worked alot with the eye pencils which are soft and go on really well and the eyeliner pen is really great for a 60's flick if you want a stronger line.
I also really liked the blush colours and my favourite is TAWNY as it has a slight shimmer to it and is also a little pink and a little tan colour so perfect for the rosy cheek and a contour.
The eye colours all have 3 shades in them and so give you a deeper shade a lighter highlight and an in between colour which is normally just a bit darker than the highlighter ,
my favourites for all my looks and I would say great for some daytime or nightime make-up are,
WISTERIA LANE..really earthy tones
DRAMA QUEEN.....still earthy but more irridescent and pinky brown tones.
SEDONA...again quite earthy with an underlying orange tone to the brown
SANDSTONE and LITTLE BLACK DRESS which are Amazing ,perfect for nightime with shimmer and bronzes and chocolates I would say both are an absolute must!!!

I always love to use shimmer on the runway especally in the corner of the eyes and on the cheekbones and even above the centre on the lip and down the highlight of the nose it just always adds more drama,
fortunately there is also a great shimmer in this line called STAR POWDER,and I believe they are working on doing some more so lets see.

Finally the Lips,my statement sometimes for Spring Summer as it seems to work well for the runway and for every day, a great red lip with a nude face is fresh and yet dramatic and I always say if you have the right lips then always do a red lip day or night,on one of my shows I used a great lip colour 'BOMBSHELL' It is the perfect red bright and fresh and I highly recommend it,some other shades I also love are;
LOLLIPOP, MOCHA MAUVE,TIGERS EYE.

And finally a wonderful idea that they decided to do was a lipstick with a built in lipbalm,so softening and moisterizing the skin while providing colour ,AGE DEFYING LIP COLOR,the two shades that are my favorourite are VENUS which is a bight vibrant pink,and BABE which is a lovely nude tone.

Spring Summer 2011 runway trends

Ok new york fashion week would not be the same without the Marc Jacobs show ,and although I wasn't able to work on it this season because I was doing back to back shows for fashion 360,I am posting the beauty look .
What I am beginning to notice with some of the spring summer beauty is a return to a retro glamour using a stronger make-up than we usually see on the runway for Spring, stronger lips in some cases red and berries and a stronger eye ,smokey and dark liner ,the skin is of course dewy and lighter mostly but it is exciting to see such a varied look ,I loved the red lip at Maria Cornejo one of my favourite designers,and here at Marc Jacobs a darker lip with a berry and a smoky eye,Nars did the look and describes it;

“There’s a seventies and thirties influence in the collection,” said Nars, who looked to highly glamorous icons of the former era for inspiration. “Angelica Huston, Pat Cleveland, Marie Helvin,” he said of the models’ glossy emerald eyes, flushed cheeks, and aubergine lips. Of the erased brows—bleached into submission backstage by colorist Laurie Foley at Jacobs’s request—“there’s got to be a twist"

Well here lies the confusion,we are nearing the new season,that being fall of course,but in terms of fashion week ,which is approaching I am mentally in full on spring mode!!
Anyway I want to talk about fall make-up and confuse myself enormously!!!

Pastels,hard to use but sometimes fun!!

Hi there!

God it's been forever ,I have not been in a blogging mood,but now I'm back..

I wanted to discuss pastels,and in the same family as our Marie Antoinette shoot,here is a feeling of pastels,can we all walk out the door wearing yellow and blue eyeshadow?

Probably not,but there are many different ways to wear it,and I would say definitely more of a summer feeling,so whether it is a light yellow or a electric blue or baby blue, ,such as one the Shu Uemura make

or a slightly more watered down version,just remember you can just smudge a little across the eyelid or you can put more on and take it out towards the cheek as a wash of colour..

SKIN CARE !!!

I really hate being BLAH BLAH BLAH about your skin,taking care of it and all that kinda stuff....BUT if you don't take care of your skin,you can't wear beautiful make-up!!!!!!

My favourite skin care line at this point is either the FC5 for slightly younger skin ,made from real fruit an veg extracts ,they take the actual cells and put them in the cream..amazing!!!!

Or the RE9 line ,which I love as it as amazing anti aging benefits and feels like it is really nourishing your skin,and creates a wonderful hydration without being sticky and oily.

PINK CHEEKS...

I think that there are some beautiful pinks out there that really look great for day or evening.

I know that the rule of thumb has been for ages now to put a hint of colour on the apple of the cheek when smiling and this is still a good rule especially with a cream blush,but also it is really fun to try out pinks on the top of the cheek almost creating a 80's vibe but when you take the colour up towards the eye,top of the cheek bone then it becomes a modern day take on the 80's glam.

MAKING A STATEMENT

Well I just spent several hours out in the ridiculous New York heat,96 degrees !!!
I came home and realized that when we are going out at night this summer, it may be too hot and humid to wear base or blush but we can most certainly make a statement with a bold and bright eyeshadow colour,inkeeping with our last post with just a hint of colour,this is more about making a statement with colour and in this case I chose yellow.

Yellow I find very interesting as an eye colour ,because weirdly enough I find it works on pale skin,it looks great on olive skin,and really amazing on darker tones .I think it is better to contrast the yellow with a thin black eyeline,maybe just in the eyelash line ,so we don't overwhelm the yellow,and then take the shadow and brush it across the whole lid, blending out towards the brows,you can literally take your finger and just smudge it outwards to blend any hard lines and give a smoother finish.

Then just finish with a layer of mascara,for a fun and bold statement !!

A POP OF COLOUR!

Ok so you are going out and maybe your little back dress or even your daytime outfit is just shouting out for a side of colour,and you don't feel like doing a lipstick or a bag or even a scarf,well how about a eyeline!

These days there are many wonderful eyeliners in really great colours such as acid green or turquoise,a bright pink,I have a few suggestions;

Tarte ...'Ballet dancers'
Nars.....'Bains Douches'
Mac....'Greenglo'
Make-up forever....'no.14 and no.20' orange and pink

I suggest that you apply it only to the top of the lid and not underneath,we don't want to look like clowns ladies,and sometimes you will find with these pencils you may need to double up with the application to get the depth of colour you are looking for,always finish off with a good layer of mascara to provide some elegance to the eye!!

Thakoon make-up for spring summer 2010

Ok so here is a show that I worked on with the amazingly talented Diane Kendel,one of my personal make-up heroes and great friend. This is a look we achieved with all Nars make-up and I wanted to talk about the look ,as it's such a modern and cool summer make-up that everyone can wear for day or evening and the products we used.

This picture shows you one of the models being worked on backstage at Thakoon,the skin is light and dewy and the lip is nude and the eye is very slightly smokey with a hint of shimmer with silver highlights and a contoured cheek.

Here are the products we used to acheive this look;

Nars sheer matte foundation,and then apply a new product which Nars just brought out which is an absolute must in your make-up kit,it's called Nars Orgasm Illuminator,and lightly apply it to cheeks,nose,forehead and chin.

To contour the cheeks ,which means instead of using the apple of the cheek,apply a darker shade in the sockets of the cheekbone to therefore sculpt the face,we used Nars Malaysia Multiple Bronzer,and then highlight the cheeks with a light shimmer,we used Nars Hungry Heart Blush Duo.

On the eyes, Nars Alhambra Duo Eyeshadow on the entire eyelid up to the brows.

Blend Nars D.Gorgeous Single Eyeshadow,with Nars Kuala Lumpur Duo,in the crease and around the eye itself.

Now the only thing I would change for everyday that wasn't used on the runway is to apply a little mascara,as we actually applied a shadow to the lashes,and then finish off with Nars Bali Single eyeshadow,on the inner and outer corners of the ye to make them pop!!!

Finally the lips we actually muted them with concealer but again I would say for every day ,lets just go with the lip gloss,in Nars Ophelia..

ok I have been in love with this movie since it was launched into the world of cinema ,written and directed by Sophia Coppola,of course visually stunning,shot mostly in Versailles,which believe me is magical and just breathtaking in itself. I went there with my daughter two years ago and we rode our bicycles around the estate and I just nearly cried when we sat at the bottom of the beautiful lakes looking up at Versailles ,it was heavenly!!
I loved the movie and love this shoot for Vogue by the magnificent Annie Leibovitz,what glorious gowns and how fab would it be to still have a reason to dress like this.
I do however think that the simple and almost minimalist make-up that was worn in these times and translated by the talented and famous Stephane Marais,so well executed,and looks so beautiful it made me wander why can't we infact look like this now,really it is just a perfect skin ,a gorgeous cheek stain and A lip stain to acheive what I think is pretty and feminine ,and again similar to out 'summer lip' but just a bit extra,adding a cheek and really more of a stain on the lip .

let's talk about products,I love love love Nars newly renovated foundations ,'sheer glow' and if you were pale skinned ,then you will just love 'Siberia' but really for this Marie Antoinette look ,we have to be less dewy and more matt,which is always harder in the summer months,so I suggest a foundation powder,such as ID Bare Minerals,which gives a light coverage and is more matt,or Nars also do a great foundation to powder

so there's the skin,and really just a light coating of mascara,and now to the cheek,of course you just want to hit the apple of the cheek so make sure you are smiling on the inside and out,while applying,I would say try Benefit rose color stain,'benetint' it is a lip and cheek stain ,

and is perfect for both,it may feel a little dry on the lips,so if you feel like you need more moisture you can add a little lip balm over the top,such as rosebud salve,available at Ricky's,it is possibly our insider industry favourite lip balm!!

alternatively go for a pinky lip stick,such as 'lustre' by Mac,it has a vintage feel about the colour and is perfect to achieve a modern version of this look!!

SUMMER LIPS

OK so here's the scoop,summer is definitely here and its hot and steamy out there,so lets brighten it up some with a gorgeous bold and sexy lip colour!

I think there is nothing sexier than a bright pillar box red lip,or a bright fuschia pink,personally my two favourites are ,Heatwave and Schiap both by the Nars,and can be worn independantly as either a red or a pink,or what I love to do is mix them together and create a beautiful pink/red tone ,try it out ladies .

Ok ,so here you have it my first posting on Saturday June 5th.

I named my blog 'MAKE-UP WARRIOR' because I believe that make-up and the world of beauty needs to be daring and creative and free,take away the rules and the tired thoughts of what we are told about make-up and try something new,ladies it's time to try some bright colours or a daring idea which will make someone look and think!!

This story is focusing on Colour and this shot best symbolized what I belive is the modern day 'Warrior' as ladies we ALL are Warriors ,as we go to work,deal with our children and be the superheroes we are!!

As you can see I applied them almost as if she were about to go out to war,but lets face it sometimes when we walk out for the day ,it feels like we are heading out to war,and this would be a great look for anyone who really feels up to the challenge,perhaps I might suggest a diluted version for the daytime ,but really ladies get creative and think about some colours.
